The Maui wildfires are now the worst in the United States in the last 100 years, according to Hawaii Governor Josh Green (D), who made the announcement on Saturday afternoon local time. It would take a long time for tourism and the West Maui community to recover, he cautioned, given the devastating fire was caused by an unprecedented confluence of climatic conditions. The number of fatalities is anticipated to increase, and Maui's police chief appealed for patience from the public in identifying casualties, saying that some victims' corpses are so badly damaged that they crumble when picked up.
