Mayawati hails from a Dalit family, a historically oppressed and marginalized community in India. Her entry into politics began in the early 1970s when she joined the Bahujan Samaj Party, a political party that primarily represents Dalits, Adivasis (indigenous people), and other oppressed communities. Mayawati quickly rose through the ranks of the party, displaying strong leadership qualities and a commitment to social justice.

In 1995, Mayawati became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, for the first time. Her tenure marked a significant milestone as she became the first woman from the Dalit community to hold such a high political office in India. She would go on to serve as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on four separate occasions, demonstrating her political prowess and popularity among her supporters.
